The article «Biofilm infections between Scylla and Charybdis: interaction of antibiotics with host antimicrobial peptides» is the result of joint work of employees from Allopharm and scientists from the laboratory of biopharmacology and immunology of insects of SPbSU.

The studies described in this article are aimed at increasing the activity of low molecular weight antibiotics against biofilms formed by pathogenic bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii.

As an adjuvant for antibiotics, the FLIP7 complex is suggested, including the sum of the antimicrobial peptides produced by the Calliphora vicina fly larvae in the active immune response stage. In testing on biofilms, FLIP7 demonstrated a high degree of synergism with antibiotics of various classes (meropenem, amikacin, kanamycin, ampicillin, vancomycin, cefotaxime, etc.), and in this model the synergy was more
pronounced than in a planktonic culture of the same microorganisms.

The obtained data give prerequisites for the development of new treatment regimens for bacterial infections resistant to the action of modern antimicrobial agents.
